About Us

Charged with promoting economy and efficiency within the Justice Department, the Office of the Inspector General is an independent entity within the Department of Justice (DOJ) that reports to both the Attorney General and Congress.  Our mission is to investigate allegations of waste, fraud, and abuse in DOJ programs and personnel, and to promote economy and efficiency in DOJ operations.  We have jurisdiction to review programs and personnel in all DOJ components, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), and the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices.

We undertake reviews and performance audits that entail critical analysis of policies, processes, and outcomes. Much of our work is grounded in gathering and analyzing data, making logical and well-supported findings, developing recommendations for improvement based on such analysis, and then communicating these results to senior leaders and decision-makers.  OIG reviews have independently and objectively examined some of the most complex and sensitive issues facing the Department of Justice.

  • Evaluating and reviewing surveys and assisting audit survey and verification program development.  Applicants hired under this announcement may also be assigned to review small programs or activities of limited scope under supervisory guidance.  Applicants also must be able to perform research, conduct interviews, and analyze documents and other evidence in both a team environment and individually.  On larger reviews, the candidate will assist senior employees by gathering and analyzing data and making recommendations based on such analysis.
  • Composing work papers and summaries for reviews, performing data analysis, and developing draft finding sheets that clearly identify the logic flow.  The Program Analyst submits all work to an electronic work system so that it can be used and reviewed by supervisors and other team members.
